Hugh Mann is a conscript of the Sovereign Regency whose gift with animals has found him training the fierce war hounds that bolster the Legion’s front line ranks.

Disowned by his parents and sold into conscription at a young age, Hugh has always felt lesser-than. After countless instances of bullying, abuse and neglect by his peers in the Legion, he now finds peace in the things he can control; his hobbies, academics and furry friends. His prized hound Bubbie is his pride and joy.

His eccentricities often find him at odds with the values of the strict, unquestioning rule of the Sovereign Legion.

Many of his brothers-in-arms view these quirks as weaknesses, some going so far as to imply heresy. In The Cut, conformity is seen as a requirement to live a life of true service to the Empire and the Sovereign Saint himself. Hugh hopes to one day break free from this oppressive regime and discover the great mysteries of the world.
